Digital Learning Opportunities for Educators
Hello educators! We had a wonderful session on October 8 for advising students with disabilities. Chris Nelson, Transition Specialist at the Education Service Center for Region 13, showcased the latest updates and procedures to best serve special education students in Texas. Here’s a brief recap of the session:
Transition Services in the Law:
Transition services are a coordinated set of activities focused on improving the academic and functional achievement of the child with a disability to facilitate the child’s movement from school to post-school activities. In Texas, transition planning for students with disabilities starts at age 14. This process is crucial as it helps prepare students for post-secondary education, employment, and independent living. It is important that each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) includes specific transition goals and services that are tailored to their interests and needs.
Texas Transition and Employment Guide:
The Texas Transition and Employment Guide can help students with disabilities plan for adult life. Special education students can use this guide to find out what to expect and where to find help for life after high school. There are nine sections in the guide including transition planning, careers, college, financial, and next steps.
Higher Education Resource Guide for Students with Disabilities:
The Higher Education Resource Guide for Students with Disabilities includes information for future college students, parents, high school counselors, and other educators. The guide features tips on preparing for higher education, from how to plan while in high school to what to do when accepted by a college. For students who do not plan to attend college, information about other educational and career options is also available.
Roadmap to Texas Transition Resources:
Did you know that many local and state resources available to students or adults with disabilities go unused? The Roadmap to Texas Transition Resources includes lists by area to quickly identify needed resources: Advocacy, Financial, Legal, Education, Employment, and Community.
